Welcome to Sci-Fi Sundays YEAR 2 at Deptford Cinema. Join us for a special screening on the last Sunday of the month. Split again into 4 quarterly mini-seasons our 2020 programme will delve into themes of paranoia and invasion, marvel at the mysteries of the mind, journey across the universe and show you that nothing is quite what it seems…

Alongside each screening we’ve organised a little something extra; quizzes, short-films, expert talks discussions and much more.

A cult classic that remains surprisingly overlooked, particularly as director John Frankenheimer made it immediately after his celebrated paranoia classic The Manchurian Candidate. Seconds is just as sinister and mysterious. Arthur Hamilton, a middle-aged man dissatisfied with his life receives an invitation from a friend, Charlie, who Arthur believes had died some time ago. Charlie makes him an offer – an opportunity to live a new life, free of obligations, free of old age and free to do whatever he likes. But there’s a catch, Hamilton will have to leave his body behind…

A commercial failure at the time, Seconds’ reputation has risen over the intervening years due to its stunning production design, terrifying cinematography and astute exploration of themes around bio-engineering, the emptiness of modernity and personal identity. Years ahead of its time, the film’s subject matter resonates more strongly now than ever before.

The [reissue] is long-awaited justice for an obscure masterpiece. Ahead of its time...a stunning revelation and conclusion.
