After a long pandemic-induced hiatus Deptford Cinema is back screening films. Whilst we seek a new permanent venue, we have entered into an exciting partnership with Deptford Lounge and The Albany to show a season of carefully curated films over the coming months as some COVID restrictions are lifted and we can again begin to enjoy cinema as a social experience. All within the beating heart of Deptford!

Deptford Cinema is proud to present QUEEN & SLIM (2020). This is our first indoor screening at Deptford Lounge, part of our summer season of films in partnership with the Albany and Deptford Lounge. Due to social distancing measures, tickets for the event will need to be booked in advance.

Due to unforeseen circumstances we will not be running our bar at this event, however you are welcome to BYOB

All our screenings at the Albany and Deptford Lounge follow COVID social distancing and safety regulations. See below for further details.

* Note: Due to social distancing seating arrangements, we will not be able to admit anybody into the venue after 19:00. We advise you to arrive between 18:30 and 18:50. *

  • Queen & Slim

  • dir. Melina Matsoukas

  • starring. Jodie Turner-Smith, Daniel Kaluuya, Bokeem Woodbine, Indya Moore

  • country. USA, CANADA

  • year. 2020

  • runtime. 132 MINS

  • rating. 15

An unexpected turn at the end of Queen & Slim's first date forces the pair on the run whilst evading the law. In the process they become a powerful symbol of trauma, terror, grief and pain for people all across the country.

As the film moves toward its painfully inevitable climax, Queen and Slim fulfills the promise made by Waithe and Matzoukas to create a new form of protest art. Their film isn’t meant to lionize these two everyday people-turned-folk heroes, but to celebrate their strength and pride.
— Peter Travers - Rolling Stone
