Malcolm and Sofia are two Bronx teenagers out to make a mark on the city with their graffiti. With a plan to tag an iconic New York landmark, they set out to find the $500 they need to accomplish their mission. Their quest involves dabbling in petty drug-dealing and street crime, though for all of Malcolm’s self-assuredness and Sofia’s mouthiness, the pair find their path is laid with obstacles. A big-hearted New York story, Gimme the Loot captivated audiences at SXSW to take the Grand Jury Prize and features highly likeable and understated performances from non-professional actors Tashiana Washington and Ty Hickson that help make this a sweet, fresh caper free of cynicism.
