Set in central Gothenburg, Play depicts the exploits of a group of boys aged 12-14 who persistently rob other children using an elaborate role-play set-up that was dubbed the ‘little brother number’. Based on a series of real-life incidents, Ruben Östlund’s film re-enacts a day in the life of these young thieves and their victims. Using a steadicam, often fixed in position, Östlund (Involuntary, Force Majeure, The Square) positions the audience as a voyeur watching a piece of street theatre, creating a film that is not only challenging to witness but forces us to consider and reconsider how we feel about the personal, social and political morality of what we are seeing play out in front of us. The extreme role-play sustained in the film is acted out by non-actors using improvised dialogue, resulting in a film that is impeccably crafted but also hard-hitting and deeply provocative.
