Episode 04 - 21/07/20

Deptford Cinema Film and Book Club discuss the movie, The Last Black Man in San Francisco, in light of the gentrification of Deptford.

In this episode, Caroline, Tashi and Ben chat about one of the outstanding movies of 2019, The Last Black Man in San Francisco, the semi-autobiographical story of Jimmie Fails, who tries to reclaim his childhood home in a gentrified area of San Francisco.

We are delighted to be joined by Anita Strasser, artist, activist and author of Deptford is Changing, to talk about her new publication, which is all about the impact of gentrification.

NB: The podcast was recorded in April 2020 before the death of Floyd George and the resulting Black Lives Matter campaign. We believe our conversations may have had a different focus if recorded more recently.
