Split again into 4 quarterly mini-seasons our 2020 programme will delve into themes of paranoia and invasion, marvel at the mysteries of the mind, journey across the universe and show you that nothing is quite what it seems…

Alongside each screening we’ve organised a little something extra; quizzes, short-films, expert talks discussions and much more.

An alien crash lands in Manhattan. He arrives on Ellis Island, he cannot talk but he can hear the memories of those who came before him. In the city he can pass as human, albeit as a black man, and the prejudice he encounters as a result of that baffles him, as does much about this strange world he finds himself in. It turns out the alien is on the run; an escapee from his home planet, he is pursued by two other aliens (one of whom is played by director John Sayles) and his adopted home of Harlem may prove to be the only place where he can find refuge.

A cult hit, The Brother from Another Planet is an allegory for the treatment of race in America – and the systems of oppression that underpin it. It is also a charming film, thanks in no small part to the mute but charismatic performance of lead Joe Morton.

Each little piece of his daily life a wonderful short film in itself...“The Brother From Another Planet” is not a blueprint on how to save the world, but a warm, humane guide on how to live in it

SPACE CLARINET is being brought to Deptford Cinema by Stergin, a producer and multi-instrumentalist based in Deptford. His most recent project "12 Photos 12 Tracks - the global journey of a Polaroid turned into music" earned him the prestigious Do-It-Differently Award from Help Musicians UK as well as support by the Arts Council England.

Stergin will be doing a short musical reaction to the film prior the screening. Other performances later in the year are planned as well.

Stergin’s record is one that you just couldn’t have heard five years ago. It’s completely in the now, in the moment trying to push the boundaries of what’s possible and what can be done.
— Tom Robinson, BBC6 Music
