João Pedro Rodrigues is a Portuguese filmmaker based in Lisbon. His work explores human desire in all its guises and disguises, reflecting the multifarious histories of film, from classic genres to experimental film. Through the lens of different directors, we see how Pedro Rodrigues impacted the queer imaginary within Portugal and across its borders. Featuring works by Rodrigues’ life partner João Rui Guerra da Mata and French filmmaker Marie Losier, this screening reflects on the themes of queerness and friendship.
Rodrigues’ films have premiered and won prizes at the world’s foremost film festivals including Cannes, Locarno, Toronto, and Venice.
The screening will be followed by a discussion with Queer Lisboa’s director João Ferreira and curator João Conceição.
Queer Lisboa – International Queer Film Festival is the first Portuguese Film Festival dedicated exclusively to screening gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and transsexual themed films, a genre known as Queer Cinema. This is a genre that outbreaks with increasing expression in major international film festivals and it’s the goal of Queer Lisboa to program what is more relevant in aesthetic and narrative terms in the worldwide panorama, trying to compensate the fact that the access to this cinema is restricted to the mainstream audience.
We are delighted to partner with Queer Lisboa to bring you this film programme.
