I Am Not a Witch is the feature debut of the Zambian-born Welsh director, Rungano Nyoni. This magical-realist satire follows the story of Shula, a nine-year-old girl who is accused of being a witch by the residents of a Zambian village. Faced with an existential conundrum, Shula's life is explored with an esoteric subtext interspersed with the supernatural, surrealist comedy and absurdism, in a distinctly Zambian context.

Rungano Nyoni’s debut feature, the story of a girl in Zambia accused of witchcraft, is comic, tragic – and captivatingly beautiful
