"The showtunes are weapons-grade: especially Sit Down You're Rockin' the Boat, which never fails to get any audience on its feet. A must.."- Peter Bradshaw, Guardian Film
Based on the popular 1950 Broadway musical of the same name, Guys and Dolls, directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz (All About Eve, Cleopatra), is a hugely entertaining musical with some of the brightest stars of its day, including Marlon Brando in his only musical role.
1950s New York: all the hot gamblers are in town, and they’re all depending on Nathan Detroit (Sinatra) to set up the next game. The only problem? He needs money, and to get it, bets inveterate gambler Sky Masterson (Brando) that he can’t get a date with virtuous, demure Sarah Brown (Simmons). Meanwhile, Nathan’s longtime fiancée Adelaide (Blaine) is desperate for him to marry her so they can finally settle down.
With serious star power, crackling dialogue and phenomenal songs (including ‘Sit Down You’re Rockin’ the Boat’), Guys and Dolls is a five star entertainment and a real joy to watch.
Starting October 2019, Deptford Cinema joins in the BFI's nationwide three-month celebration of the musical film genre with our own special and spectacular season! From the 'Golden Era' of fabulous foot-tapping ruled by the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers double act, right through to more provocative takes like Bob Fosse's Cabaret, lesser-seen milestones such as the all-black cast of Cabin in the Sky, and on to the 21st Century smashes like La La Land, we will pick you and sweep you right through nine decades of Hollywood's musical history in eight screenings! Expect short films and programme notes at all screenings, and even some special guest speakers!
