After a long pandemic-induced hiatus Deptford Cinema is back screening films. Whilst we seek a new permanent venue, we have entered into an exciting partnership with Deptford Lounge and The Albany to show a season of carefully curated films over the coming months as some COVID restrictions are lifted and we can again begin to enjoy cinema as a social experience. All within the beating heart of Deptford!

Spike Lee's 1989 classic DO THE RIGHT THING is our fourth installment at Deptford Lounge, part of our ongoing summer film programme in partnership with the Albany and Deptford Lounge.

All our screenings at the Albany and Deptford Lounge follow COVID social distancing and safety regulations. See below for further details.

* Note: Due to social distancing seating arrangements, we will not be able to admit anybody into the venue after 19:00. We advise you to arrive between 18:30 and 18:50. *

Spike Lee had already made an indie splash alongside the likes of Jim Jarmusch with his credit card-funded She’s Gotta Have It but it was Do the Right Thing that became his signature.

Lee might be thought of as a didact, but this 80s classic shows a remarkably even-handed, subtle, almost delicate approach to its racial politics, leaving the viewer with multiple questions to pore over as it refuses to offer up easy answers. As tensions boil over, Lee’s film elicits emotions as hot as the sweltering New York summer’s day its characters have to endure, anchored by the sounds of Public Enemy’s Fight The Power which drifts in and out, and set design that paints Brooklyn in primary colours as bright as those of classic Jean Luc Godard.

A pulsating homage to life on New York’s streets, achieved thanks to Lee’s sleepless eye, but a passionate-yet-dignified study of racism, too.
