Comprised entirely of footage from live-streaming app Periscope where users broadcast, comment and send messages in real time, National Narrative offers a fresh depiction of young, contemporary France. Avoiding derision of his subjects, director Grégoire Beil captures users’ boldness and bravado as well as their self-consciousness and shyness. Skilfully probing questions of representation, reality, national identity and intimacy, National Narrative uses sharp, lithe editing to make a film that captivates, charms and challenges ideas of our online selves.
