Comprised entirely of footage from live-streaming app Periscope where users broadcast, comment and send messages in real time, National Narrative forges a playful poetry of the everyday. A fresh depiction of young, contemporary France, director Grégoire Beil explores selfie exhibitionism, the attendant consciousness that comes from honing online personas, and the nature of internet discourse. Avoiding derision of his subjects, he captures users’ boldness and bravado as well as their self-consciousness and paradoxical shyness. Considering how exaggeratedly mundane chatter can easily sit alongside abuse and tragedy, National Narrative skilfully probes questions of representation, reality, national identity and intimacy. Using sharp, lithe editing, the result is a film that captivates, charms and challenges ideas of our online selves.
