A lyrical second feature by photographer-director Khalik Allah, Black Mother is a paean to Jamaica, hauntingly capturing the pluralism of the island's overlapping worlds. Using an array of voices and characters, from charismatic priests to sex workers, as well as a range of visual techniques, from gritty Super-8mm to precise HD video, the film is deep with atmosphere, cementing its maker as one of today's great non-fiction stylists.
