COLD FISH (2010) - THIRD WINDOW FILM CLUB

horror-film-cold-fish.jpg

The life of Shamoto, a mild-mannered, middle-aged tropical fish shop owner is taken over by Murata, a fellow fish seller who initially appears to be jovial, charming and respectable, but soon turns out to be a cold-blooded killer. Loosely based on the real-life exploits of two Tokyo serial killers, a husband and wife duo who operated a pet shop and murdered at least four people, Cold Fish explores what happens when a family finds itself overtaken by an outsider. Will Shamoto extricate himself from Murata’s grip? An unsettling, unpredictable, often grisly thrill-ride that rarely offers respite, legendary cult director Sion Sono has created a film of dramatic mood-swings to match those of its terrifying lead character. Not for the faint-hearted, Cold Fish is as inventive as it is intense.

Blackly funny…. provocative, inventive gore and an enigmatic, oblique approach to meaning… a triumphantly unhinged achievement from an intelligent and profoundly individual filmmaker, who clearly delights in darkness
— Electric Sheep
Always entertaining
— Time Out
Asia Extreme fans will lap up this blood-soaked Japanese comedy... at its best and beastliest, it recalls the likes of Audition
— Metro
Deliciously warped… Propelled by slaughterhouse levels of gore and wickedly absurdist humour… Sono knows that, in business as in romance, intervention between masochist and sadist is almost always futile
— The New York Times
Wild, head-turning, stomach-churning stuff… a bracing addition to the overstuffed canon of serial-killer cinema
— Village Voice
