A portrait of the trailblazing British artist, filmmaker and activist Derek Jarman, as told by those who knew him best.

Derek Jarman was born Michael Derek Elworthy Jarman in war-torn London in 1942.

As a filmmaker he is best known for Jubilee (1978), Caravaggio (1986), The Last of England (1987) and Blue (1993). Tilda Swinton rose to prominence having starred in several of his films.

He also directed music videos for several bands including The Smiths and Pet Shop Boys.

He died in 1994 at the age of just 52.

Andy Kimpton-Nye is an independent documentary filmmaker specialising in film-related subjects. He has made full-length docs, and shorts, on film greats such as Luis Bunuel, Alan Clarke, Terence Davies, Bill Douglas, Derek Jarman, Stanley Kubrick, David Lean and Orson Welles. He also works as a freelance TV producer.
