Based on Christine Leunens's book Caging Skies the film chronicles the intertwining lives of Jojo, a German boy and Elsa, a Jewish fugitive as the war progresses, surrounded by a picaresque cast of humorous, bizarre and menacing characters alongside disturbing, tragicomic and surreal events, culminating in a bittersweet conclusion. The film has won multiple awards, but contains themes and images that whilst integral to the narrative might be considered disturbing to some viewers.
