Deptford Cinema’s ‘East Asia Film Club’ is a new monthly programme which will present the best cinema from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, and Korea.
In April the East Asia Film Club presents The Wild Goose Lake: directed by Diao Yinan (Black Coal, Thin Ice). The Wild Goose Lake is a beautifully shot neo-noir crime drama which was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival.
Set in the nooks and crannies of densely populated Wuhan, The Wild Goose Lake follows the desperate attempts of small-time mob boss Zhou Zenong to stay alive after he mistakenly kills a cop and a dead-or-alive reward is put on his head.
“The Chinese director’s followup to his Berlin-winning 2014 drama proves absorbing, original”: The Guardian
“Smart and stylish, The Wild Goose Lake blends B-movie thrills with bold filmmaking choices and thought-provoking social commentary”: Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus
