Marie and Henrik meet one summer, falling into a blissful romance that is tragically cut short. Years later, after rediscovering her old diary from that fateful time, melancholy Marie returns to her uncle's home in an attempt to quiet the demons that have haunted her ever since. Ingmar Bergman’s tenth film has been described as "a gentle drift toward true mastery", marking the beginning of a highly productive decade of work.
