Adelaide returns to her beachside childhood home with husband Gabe and their two children but is haunted by a traumatic incident from her past. She becomes more unsettled as a series of coincidences lead her to believe that something untoward is taking place.

Set on a stretch of idyllic Northern California coastline in the couple’s comfortable beach home, Us (or U.S. as it is sometimes referred to) explores issues of social justice, class and modern day consumerism in America. More ambitious than the director’s 2017 debut Get Out, it also marks a more determined, self-assured step into the horror genre; whereas Get Out unsettled and disturbed, Us is a full blown horror film complete with jump scares, chase scenes and blood.

This is not to overlook that Us is both thoughtful and provocative and the film prompted a flurry of discussion and range of interpretations when it was released at the start of 2019. The story can be seen as a critique of contemporary capitalist society and the extent to which wealthy Americans’ affluent lifestyles are fundamentally founded on the trials of an ignored underclass. There is a dystopian lesson about science and exploitation. And it is hard not to take from it a message about psychological bases of our deepest fears: Mark Kermode in The Guardian described the film as “a modern fable that locates our anxieties about outsiders in a guilty fear of ourselves.”

A colossal cinematic achievement...a work of directorial virtuosity.
