Welcome to Sci-Fi Sundays YEAR 2 at Deptford Cinema. Join us for a special screening on the last Sunday of the month. Split again into 4 quarterly mini-seasons our 2020 programme will delve into themes of paranoia and invasion, marvel at the mysteries of the mind, journey across the universe and show you that nothing is quite what it seems…

Alongside each screening we’ve organised a little something extra; quizzes, short-films, expert talks discussions and much more.

The year is 2163 and the crew of the Ikarie XB-1 are on a 28 month mission deep into space in search of alien life. But the crew soon find themselves en route to confronting the effects of a malignant dark star, the destructive legacy of the 20th century and, ultimately, the limits of their own sanity.

The film’s influence can be seen on the films that followed, from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey to Andrei Tarkovsky's Solaris, Ridley Scott’s Alien and even the TV show Star Trek; all of which bear striking similarities to Ikarie XB-1 but none more so than Kubrick’s sci-fi classic. After all, it is believed the director screened the film as one of many space genre films while researching 2001.

Upon its release Ikarie XB-1 was regarded as one of the best science fiction films of the era and for us it’s no surprise. We are delighted to be screening the original Czech version (English subtitled) - so, join us as we set off and ‘Voyage to the End of the Universe’ where the science fiction we all know and love was truly discovered.

One of the last century’s great sci-fi films.
