In this disturbing yet profound picture of the near future, an Earth ravaged by climate change has led to the mass colonisation of Mars. Huge cruise liners carry the remaining inhabitants of Earth on the weeks-long journey to their new life on Mars. During a routine voyage the ship Aniara is knocked off course by a collision with space debris. With the ship’s engines out of action the crew are unable to correct the ship’s course and it strays further and further from its destination. The vast ship, with its thousands of passengers, slowly drifts deeper into the uncharted depths of space. As the weeks, months and years pass the lives of its inhabitants become increasingly strained and divided as the knowledge of their complete isolation takes its toll.

A “stunning eco-parable” (The Observer), Aniara is an epic space opera, made on a surprisingly modest budget by two debut feature directors. With its remarkable production design, poignant drama, and gripping storytelling it should become a modern sci-fi classic in the same way Moon did ten years ago.

A narrative as satisfying as it’s conception is ambitious...a fascinating adaption.
