Following up one of (if not THE) greatest sci-fi film of all time is no easy feat. But 2010, while not as groundbreaking as Kubrick’s masterpiece is a fascinating, engrossing work in its own right. Closely following Arthur C. Clarke’s novel that continued the Odyssey, 2010 explores and progresses the mysteries raised by the famous monolith and the strange events beyond Jupiter…

Nine years after the mysterious failure of the Discovery mission, and the malfunctioning of HAL 9000, a joint US-Soviet expedition heads to the abandoned ship to discover what happened. But as they arrive strange activity lures them to the surface of Jupiter’s icy moon Europa where their discoveries will have huge repercussions for mankind.

Crucially for the time period the film was made in, 2010’s mission is a necessary collaboration between US and Russian scientists. Against the backdrop of nuclear tensions the nations must work together in order to solve the mysteries of the Monolith.

A starry cast (including early roles for Helen Mirren and John Lithgow) and superb production design lend gravitas and conviction to a tale of truly cosmic proportions and universal consequences!

2010 is an essential text of the late Cold War.
