A ground-level, observational snapshot of life at a specialist care home set up by French psychoanalysts Maud Mannoni and Robert Lefort, A l’infini provides an intimate, non-judgemental insight into the staff and residents of the home created for neuro-diverse adults at the end of the 1960s, organised according to an experimental structure for autistic and psychotic children, those with learning difficulties, and adults affected by incurable mental disabilities. Originally titled After Sisyphus, Edmond Carrère’s film makes a warm case for the importance of touch and connection, patient and curious as it films tactile gestures between staff and their charges, capturing moments that can be as frustrating for those involved as they can be affectionate.
