Here We Are All Moving Images* is a speculative workshop, joined by artist James Tabbush, exploring the spaces of Google Street View and Google Earth on the cinema screen. The aim is to investigate both the technological infrastructures and affective registers of the software as it relates to our spatial and epistemological navigation of the globalised world.


One of the first instruments of cinema was a gun. Etienne-Jules Marey’s chronophotographic machine, capable of capturing 12 images per second, was the precursor to what would become an actually-moving image. Today still, with increasingly diverse technologies spanning facial recognition to satellite constellations, the image is caught in complex entanglements with systems of control and meaning. As image replicas of us take our place to circulate on the digital network, we in turn travel the same spaces with disembodied eyes. Maybe we come across ourselves, or a friend, face blurred-out, set aside on the virtual mirrors of the city. These multiple gazes of an expanded cinema, all these images which we are moved by and move with, produce surveillance, control, communication, affect and possibility.
