ANALOGUE ANIMATIONS - the programming strand celebrating non-digital animation in cinema- returns with a screening of one of the first 'atomic monster movies' from Hollywood's history. A ferocious dinosaur awakened by an Arctic atomic test terrorizes the North Atlantic and, ultimately, New York City, in The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms. The film would prove to be enormously influential, and is also significant for being the first solo feature project for animation maestro Ray Harryhausen, whose stop-motion techniques brought so many movie monsters to life. Over the next thirty years, Harryhausen would use his pioneering production style in films that are still considered classics of their genre, including Jason and the Argonauts, One Million Years BC and Clash of the Titans.
