BLADE RUNNER (1982) - How Sci-Fi Predicted Our Present

Blade Runner 1982 website image.jpg

Description:The year 2019 is here and with it comes societal changes, emerging cultural views and breakthroughs in technology that we’ve never seen before. Or have we? A spate of 1980s-produced science fiction films chose to establish their milieu specifically in the year 2019, and Deptford Cinema will be showing the best of them to see where the filmmakers got their predictions right. After each screening we will be holding a party at the cinema and want to see you in fancy dress. Come looking like how these films thought you would be dressed now! The season continues with one of the most impactful and influential films of all time, the neo-noir thriller Blade Runner. This classic emphasises humanity’s capacity for self-destruction: ecological disasters, continuing economic polarisation, the growing power of corporate structures and the emergence of soon-to-be-sentient AI which strengthen the film’s prophetic vision of 2019. Plenty of inspiration on offer to come dressed up in 2019 style, according to 1982.
