Spanning most of the 20th century, this ravishingly beautiful biopic commemorates the life and works of Bronislawa Wajs, the first publicly feted female poet from Poland's Roma minority.
Stephen Dalton, Hollywood Reporter

Papusza is based on the true story of the Roma and Polish poet Bronisława Wajs or Papusza (1908-1987), who was the first and only Roma woman who put her poems into writing and published them. By doing so, she confronted the female role within her community and, as a result, she and her family were banished for revealing their secrets. The film follows her life from birth to old age, giving insight into the Roma way of life before 1939 that was swept away by World War II and the persecution and slaughter of the Roma in Nazi-occupied Europe, and then the post-war communist regime that forcibly settled the people. Speaking mostly in Roma language, the ensemble of actors includes mostly non-professionals from Roma families.

We believe that this stunning film about this extraordinary woman will help us celebrate International Women's Day at Deptford Cinema and shine a spotlight on all the courageous women who dare to follow their own path.

On the night we will also be opening an exhibition by Ivy Mei which will run in our gallery space till 18th March.

Ivy Mei is a London-based artist who uses painting and mixed media to create obscured imaginary landscapes. Exploring layered textures and repetitive forms, Ivy mixes painting and screen printing, often recycling older pieces to create her compositions.

We are hoping for this screening to be the begining of a season of Polish films at Deptford Cinema under the working title POLSKIE KINO.

Hope you can join us!
