To welcome the Year of the Rat which will start on the 25th of January, Deptford Cinema proudly presents SO LONG, MY SON which won Silver Bear Awards for Best Actor and Best actress at the 69th Berlin International Film Festival.

The film traces the lives of two families over three decades of social, political and human upheaval in China, notably its one-child policy.

Following the loss of a child in a tragic accident, their paths separate. Destinies ebb and flow, and fortunes are transformed under the impact of a country's changing face. Yet even as their lives diverge, a common search for truth and reconciliation around the tragedy remains. But sometimes it can take a lifetime to say farewell.

Wang Xiaoshuai's acclaimed drama chronicles people and a society in full transformation - in which human relationships and the tumultuous evolution of a nation are inevitably and inextricably intertwined.

“Wang Xiaoshuai returns with an epic melodrama that hops across the tail-end of the 20th century, charting a complex if cumbersome emotional history of the country’s population-planning programme”: Sight & Sound
