A screening of moving image work from ZIA ANGER—who has written on the influence of Deren’s theory of “vertical immersion,”a poetic structure that develops not “horizontally,” according to logic, but “vertically”, according to feeling. Anger is included not for her short films, or her performance work “My First Film,” but for her music videos, work produced with musicians such as ANGEL OLSEN, MITSKI, JENNY HVAL, and MAGGIE ROGERS, cinematographers ASHLEY CONNOR (Madeline’s Madeline) and MIA CIOFFI HENRY (The Giverny Document (Single Channel),) and choreographer MONICA MIRABILE (FlucT). Across her work, Anger iconoclastically and subversively uses performance and gesture in this popular form, work that is self-reflexive about its own doubling as commercial enterprises, promotional material produced to sell a product.
