When shy, studious, vegetarian 16-year-old Justine (Garance Marillier) follows in the footsteps of her family to enrol at veterinary school, she enters an overwhelming world of boys, drugs and all-night parties. When she is forced to eat raw meat during an initiation ritual, she soon finds her body has acquired an insatiable appetite for flesh. Can she resist this new desire?
Led by a tender and ferocious performance from Marillier, writer-director Julia Ducournau’s debut is both an intense one-of-a-kind coming-of-age story and a lean and grisly tale of female sexuality. Exuberantly oozing with subtexts, perversely dark humour and moments of brutality, this is a bold, visceral, physical story of adolescence and forbidden female desire.
