stroszek.jpg

Stroszek is a German drama directed by Werner Herzog. Bruno Stroszek (sight reader Bruno S.) is an alcoholic Berlin street performer. Released from prison he goes to familiar bar where he meets his homeless friend, prostitute Eva. Together with neighbor Scheitz they go to America in search of a better life. In the beginning they do quite well, but as time passes, Stroszek feels lonely, unfulfilled and helpless. His beautiful dream turns into a nightmare. This masterpiece from Herzog is a moving ballad about finding happiness.

One of the oddest films ever made
— Roger Ebert
Stroszek is a little seen, little known giant gem of a movie.
— Dan Jardine
Stroszek contains one of the shortest, funniest holdups I’ve ever seen in a movie—but also the physical beauty of the landscapes, the city scapes,
and the squalid interiors.
— The New York Time
Among other things, Mr. Herzog visually dazzles us while he’s pulling the rug from under our feet.
