A Castle in Italy revolves around Louise, an actress in her early forties who’s taken a self-imposed retirement from the screen. Louise descends from a wealthy Italian industrial family, slightly degenerate, slightly quirky, facing the realities of modern life where snobbery and folly blend well. Only she has grown older and is confronted to issues of her age: letting her childhood go with the family castle that ought to be sold, having children...

Let a half hour pass by and concentrate again. There, you have been seduced. Because the film is funny and clever, because it manages to avoid passive aggressiveness and shallow criticism. Also because Valéria Bruni-Tedeschi swings graciously on the fine line separating real life from romance and tragedy from fantasy.
