The story of an abandoned 12-year old boy who gets taken under the wing of a local woman, this Cannes Film Festival hit follows Cyril, the eponymous kid of the title, a child left to fend for himself in a state-run children’s home after his father leaves town. Refusing to believe he has been rejected by his father, he spends his days trying to reach him, either on the phone, or on his beloved bike. It is only when he meets Samantha, a local hairdresser, that he finds someone able to give him the patience and compassion he needs to move on, even if his anger threatens to get in the way. A deceptively simple, empathetic film that explores the drama of everyday life with sensitivity but without sentimentality, this ninth effort from writer-director sibling duo Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne has simplicity and sincerity, and is heart-rendingly tender.
+ Vive Le Tour
An energetic tribute to the Tour De France - cycling’s most prestigious event, Vive Le Tour is one of the great sports documentaries. Using high-speed footage shot close-up to immerse you in the punishing experience of being a cyclist in the competition, Malle (The Silent World, Lift to the Scaffold, Au revoir les enfants) captures aspects of the race not often filmed, from crashes, pileups and doping, to how cyclists answer nature’s call.
