After the removal of Islamist President Morsi, a day of violent riots ensue, with dozens of demonstrators holding differing political and religious beliefs embedded in a police van. Can they overcome their vehement differences?
Set in 2013, after mass protests saw the ruling Muslim Brotherhood thrown out of power by the army, Clash takes place almost entirely within the claustrophobic confines of a police van as rival demonstrators find themselves trapped in stifling heat. Within this deceptively simple set-up, Mohamed Diab (following up the acclaimed CAIRO 678, which depicted female harassment in Egypt) tells a politically pulsing story with remarkable cinematic vim, pulling off the unusual feat of making a road movie about confinement.
