Set at the dawning of the new millenium, this original comedy from the brilliantly offbeat worldview of Swedish filmmaker Roy Andersson (You, the Living; A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence) is an indescribably surrealistic examination of modern life in a unnamed city that has ground to a halt and teems with directionless people teetering on the brink of madness. Through a series of interconnected comic vignettes, all marked by absurd black humour, the film's characters bear witness to an utterly motionless traffic jam, the pathetic firing of a 30-year employee, a magic trick gone horribly wrong, and the failed business ventures of a crucifix salesman. Described by critic J. Hoberman as slapstick Ingmar Bergman, the film recalls such visionaries as Samuel Beckett and Luis Bunuel, as perplexing as it is hilarious.
