MARYAM

7.30pm

The UK premiere of the winner of the 2014 Orrizonti award at the Venice film festival. This short film directed by Sidi Saleh is the carefully constructed story of Maryam, a woman given the responsibility at the last minute of caring for a man with autism. As the Christmas season approaches she agrees to accompany him to church, despite her Muslim faith. With her own beliefs brought sharply to the fore by the Christian ceremony she now attends, Maryam faces both a spiritual and physical struggle with her circumstances.

LOVELY MAN

8.00pm

Lovely Man tells the story of Cahaya, a 19-year-old girl with strong Islamic values, who discovers that her estranged father is now a transvestite sex-worker in a red-light district of Jakarta.

Despite his initial hostility and her shock, they gradually begin to re-establish their relationship. Centred on an astonishing performance by Asian Film Award-winner Donny Damara and capturing the ambient neon wash of night-time Jakarta, Indonesian indie writer-director Teddy Soeriaatmadja’s Lovely Man is, in all respects, a beautiful film; albeit about the unforgiving reality of Jakarta street life.
