THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG 'LES PARAPLUIES DE CHERBOURG'
Doors - 13:00 Film - 13:30
A homage to the Hollywood musical and a masterpiece of French New Wave cinema.
17-year old Geneviève Emery (Catherine Deneuve), an employee in her widowed mother’s chic but financially embattled umbrella shop, has fallen madly in love with Guy Foucher (Nino Castelnuovo), a 20-year-old French mechanic. When Geneviève becomes pregnant and Guy leaves for a two-year tour of combat in Algeria, she is forced to choose between waiting for Guy and accepting an offer of marriage from a wealthy diamond merchant (Marc Michel).
Featuring a cavalcade of colour, sumptuous cinematography and an ingenuous score by Michel Legrand that was modelled around the patters of everyday conversation, the film was nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Original Score and won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
LOVE SONGS 'LES CHANSONS D'AMOUR'
Doors - 15:00 Film - 15:30
An unforgettably beguiling celebration of love, loss and new beginnings.
A modern homage to the French New Wave, the Paris of Christophe Honoré's Les Chansons d'Amour (Love Songs) belongs undoubtedly to the present. Its residents talk on mobile phones and discuss Nicolas Sarkozy. But they also dwell in the Paris of classic French movies. An early shot of a couple reading in bed evokes a much-reproduced image from François Truffaut's Bed and Board. Except that, in this case, the couple is a threesome. Ismael (Louis Garrel), is at the centre of a menage-a-trois between long time girlfriend Julie (Ludivine Sagnier)and work colleage Alice (Clotilde Hesme), but tensions betwen the three begin to surface until the unexpected intervention of fate and the arrival of a handsome young man besotted with Ismael profoundly changes the destinies of all concerned.
