Train-fixated teenager Strike (Phifer) sells drugs for a local boss and is in line for promotion, on one condition: he must carry out a hit. Strike’s brother (Washington) confesses to the crime, but tough cop Rocco (Keitel) isn’t having it. Shot in a murkily handheld vérité style and written by Richard Price (The Wire, The Night Of), this Martin Scorsese-produced portrait of urban violence is a passionate, bruising interrogation of the drug trade, and a clear antecedent to The Wire.
