THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE (1962) - Monsters Down The Creek

  • Director: Richard Frankenheimer
  • Rating: 15
  • Run-time: 123minutes
  • Year: 1962
  • Country: USA

See this Cold War neo-noir suspense thriller in which the son of a right-wing politician is brainwashed as an unwitting assassin for an international Communist conspiracy. Directed with great flair and attack by Frankenheimer, who was best known for social dramas and action/suspsense films, this adaptation of Richard Condon’s novel has a terrific cast: Frank Sinatra, Laurence Harvey and Janet Leigh. The most electric performance of all comes from Angela Lansbury who is stunning as the protagonist Harvey’s twisted mother. The film’s release at the time of the Cuban missile crisis helped its commercial prospects enormously.
