NOTEBOOK #1

In these difficult times, and with Deptford Cinema’s doors closed for the time being, the spirit of cinema lives on through the passion of our volunteers and audiences.

Deptford Cinema’s volunteers will be sharing their favourite movies, stills, scores, locations and cinematic discoveries here - as an ongoing film notebook. New recommendations will be rolled out every now and then for your interest and enjoyment.

“I Get Overwhelmed” by Dark Rooms

“I Get Overwhelmed” is the second track on Dark Rooms' 2017 album, Distraction Sickness. It was released as the second single promoting the album on January 16, 2017. This moving song became famous thanks to its appearance in the trailer for the 2017 indie movie A Ghost Story.

The movie is directed by David Lowery, and stars Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara. The song appears twice in the movie – once with a different instrumental, provided by the movie’s score composer Daniel Hart, who is also the frontman of the band. In the movie’s plot the song is written, composed and performed by Casey Affleck’s character C. (Genius)

ZOMBIES! An Illustrated History of the Undead

This is the first book to take a long, putrefying look at the entire zombie phenomenon. From origins in Haitian voodoo zombie lore and the literature of Mary Shelley and Edgar Allan Poe, the undead began to slowly seep through the pulp magazines and silent cinema of the early twentieth century, and on to classic 1970s and 80s undead flicks like Lucio Fulci's Zombie and George A. Romero's legendary Dawn of the Dead.

ZOMBIES! is written by Jovanka Vuckovic, a horror expert, artist and filmmaker. Vuckovic was a former editor-in-chief of Rue Morgue Magazine, the world's largest and fastest-growing horror in culture and entertainment magazine since 1997. She also has appeared in zombie movies by Zack Snyder and George Romero.

Wasp, dir. Andrea Arnold, UK 2003, 26 min, English

WATCH

Wasp by Andrea Arnold

Filmmaker Andrea Arnold is known to wider audiences as the director of Fish Tank (2009) and American Honey (2016) for which she won the Jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Before her success in the critical mainstream she had been noticed for touching, gutsy short film Wasp (2003) based on Arnold’s childhood memories from Dartford - the town when she grew up in a working-class family. The 26-minute long film won an Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film in 2005.

Wasp tells the story of a single mother struggling in poverty and with the parental responsibilities of four children. It is a film which places the audience through every emotion: distress, anger and empathy. You will empathise with every character, as beautifully acted by Natalie Press, Danny Dyer and Jodie Mitchell. This is without a doubt one of the best short films I’ve ever seen in my life!

A conversation with Herzog

WERNER HERZOG - arguably one of the greatest living filmmakers, who battled Klaus Kinski on the set of Aguirre, Wrath of God, dragged a ship over a hill for Fitzcarraldo and famously ate his own shoe on film after losing a bet, came to Doc/Fest 2019 to discuss his acclaimed career with broadcaster Edith Bowman.
